Cricket: 3rd Test, 5th Day's Play. Pakistan Wins by 168 runs as India's Batting Collapses

India's famous batting line-up showed its vulnerability as Pakistan defeated India by 168 runs on the fifth and final day of the 3rd Test match to draw level in the three test series.

Shahid Afridi took the wickets of Sachin, Laxman, and Ganguly; Danish Kaneria chipped in with two wickets including the last wicket of Balaji, and Arshad Khan and Mohammed Sami took two apiece as a disciplined bowling performance by the Pakistanis overcame a hopeless defensive approach adopted by the Indians.

Floodgates opened with Sehwag's wicket
India started from their overnight score of 25 for no loss and both the openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir batted with ease. However things changed after Sehwag's run out for 38 runs with the score on 87.

Defensive batting by Sachin and Laxman
Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir departed in a span of a few overs, then Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman adopted a defensive strategy. Laxman is a strokeplayer and he should have played like he did in the first innings, however he too followed Sachin's defensive mode and was out LBW to Shahid Afridi after scoring only 5 runs in 29 balls.

Selectors should rethink on Ganguly's place in the team
Saurav Ganguly came to the wicket, lasted for the customary fifteen minutes and went back to the pavilion, bowled by Shahid Afridi after scoring only two runs.

Tail didn't wag except for Anil Kumble
Dinesh Karthik was bowled by Sami; Irfan who disappointed with his bowling and fielding, failed with the bat too and went for a duck after hanging on for 29 balls, Harbhajan didn't last long and was caught by Younis Khan off Danish Kaneria.

Anil Kumble remained the last man standing
Anil Kumble remained unbeaten for a fighting score of 37 runs scored off 52 balls with 7 fours. Balaji was the last man to be dismissed, out LBW to Danish Kaneria with six overs remaining for the end of the day's play, and Pakistan had won the 3rd and final Test match by 168 runs.

Defensive strategy cost India the match
Why didn't other Indian batsmen play like Anil Kumble? What has happened to Sachin's batting? Why does India always falter under pressure? There was no need to play defensive and increase the pressure. So many close in fielders and then playing maiden over after maiden over. Take a look at Shahid Afridi's bowling figures. 17-7-13-3.

Sachin should have attacked the bowling
Saurav Ganguly was expected to fail. No one had hopes on Ganguly. Laxman played defensive cricket and that cost him his wicket. Rahul Dravid somehow has never performed on his homeground, Bangalore. What about Sachin? Why did he adopt such a defensive strategy. Sachin scored 16 runs off 98 balls. He could have taken on the spinners and hit them for boundaries to scatter the close in fielders. Was it a team decision to try and save the test match by playing defensive cricket?

Saurav Ganguly hasn't performed in any match on this tour
Ganguly had a chance to play a Test match saving innings. He disappointed with his batting, like he has been doing with consistent regularity. Is Saurav Ganguly required in the team? Saurav Ganguly, on the basis of his recent batting performances, does not merit a place in India's Test team.

Heroes for Pakistan
Shahid Afridi was an unlikely bowling hero taking three wickets including those of Sachin and Laxman. Arshad Khan took the wicket of Rahul Dravid. Mohammad Sami got breakthroughs when required, and Danish Kaneria ended the innings by trapping Balaji with six overs remaining.

Brief Scores
Pakistan...1st Innings...570 all out

Cricket: 3rd Test, 5th Day. India 136/5, Pak sniff victory

Sachin and Laxman were playing cautiously when Laxman was trapped plumb in front by Shahid Afridi and India slumped to 128/4 with 44 overs still to go on the final day.
Saurav Ganguly is the next man in. This is the time for Ganguly to play a match-saving captain's innings.

Rahul Dravid was out for only 16 runs, Virender Sehwag was run out for 38, Gautam Gambhir was LBW after completing a well-made half-century, and with VVS Laxman falling LBW to Afridi and Ganguly next man in, Pakistan are sniffing at a possible victory if they get two wickets before tea.

Saurav Ganguly fails again!
Saurav Ganguly bowled by Shahid Afridi for only two runs.
Now, it's time for the selectors to take a look at Saurav Ganguly's place in the Test team. When was the last time Ganguly had made a substantial contribution and played when India needed it the most? This was a good chance for him to lead from the front by example, but he failed once again, getting out bowled by Afridi.

Sachin is holding one end with Karthik for company. If India tries to defend for 40 overs, it is going to be a tough ask. Now it is upto Dinesh Karthik to support Sachin, and Pakistan needs the wicket of Sachin to get a step closer to victory.

Why can't our team play under pressure and there was no pressure whatsoever. They built it on themselves by playing slowly.

Brief Score. 3rd Test. 5th Day. 40 overs remaining.
India...2nd Innings...136/5

Cricket: 3rd Test, 1st Day. Pakistan 323/2

Inzamam and Younis Khan in an unbeaten 3rd wicket partnership of 316 runs.
Inzamam-ul-Haq and Younis Khan put the Indian attack to sword as Pakistan reached a formidable score of 323 runs for the loss of only two wickets on the first day of the 3rd Test match at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.

Inzamam was unbeaten on 184 runs (263 balls, 25 fours) with Younis Khan, who scored his second century of the series - 127 n.o. (267 balls, 12 fours, 1 six), for company and their unbeaten 3rd wicket partnership of 316 runs took Pakistan from a dangerous 7/2 to 323/2 at stumps on the first day.

Early gains then a leather chase for Indian bowlers.
Irfan and Balaji took the wickets of openers Yasir Hamid and Shahid Afridi. After that it was day with long bowling stints for the Indians as Inzamam and Younis Khan started to play their shots on a pitch that had nothing in it for the bowlers.

Kumble, Harbhajan, Irfan, and Balaji bowled more than twenty overs each without any success against the pair of Inzamam and Younis Khan.

Inzamam enters the record books.
Inzamam joined the company of England's Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart, West Indies' Gordon Greenidge, and Pakistan's Javed Miandad in the record books as only the fifth player to score a century in his 100th Test match appearance.

Inzamam who is unbeaten on 184 runs at stumps, looks good to achieve the distinction of becoming the first player in the history of the game to score a double century in his 100th test match.

Brief Scores. 3rd Test, End of 1st Day's Play. Bangalore.
Pakistan....1st Innings...323/2 (90 overs)

Cricket: 3rd Test, 1st Day. Good Start for India. Pak 60/2

Pakistan has lost two early wickets on the first morning of the 3rd Test match played at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.

Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to bat. Yasir Hamid opened with Shahid Afridi and both of them were out within fifteen minutes of the start of the day's play.

Shahid Afridi pushed at a ball outside off-stump and went for a first ball duck, caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip off the bowling of Balaji in the second over of the day's play. Pakistan lost Yasir Hamid in the next over, Irfan inducing an edge to wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik and Pakistan's score read 7/2 in 3 overs.

Pakistan's score is 60/2 in 20 overs. Inzamam-ul-Haq and Younis Khan are at the crease. Pakistan will be hoping for a century from Inzamam in his 100th Test match.

Pakistan made two changes to the team that played the last test. Yasir Hamid replaced Taufeeq Umar to open the batting, and off-spinner Arshad Khan came in place of left-arm fast bowler Mohammed Khalil. India is playing the same team that beat Pakistan in the Kolkata test.

Cricket: 2nd Test, 5th Day's Play. Anil Kumble takes 7 Wickets as India beat Pakistan by 195 runs

Anil Kumble took 7 for 63 as India beat Pakistan by 195 runs on the 5th and final day of the 2nd test match played at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Pakistan lost last innings centurion Younis Khan for a duck, a smart stumping down the legside by Dinesh Karthik off the bowling of Anil Kumble and it was 95/2.

Inzamam played on to Anil Kumble after half an hour that yielded only 13 runs, Taufeeq Umar was caught in the slips by Sehwag off Balaji, Yousuf Youhana was caught at forward short-leg by Gautam Gambhir off Anil Kumble, Kamran Akmal played inside the line of a Harbhajan delivery and was bowled; Asim Kamal, after scoring a fighting half-century departed to a smart catch at backward short-leg by Mohammed Kaif off the bowling of Anil Kumble; Sami was trapped in front by Kumble, and Harbhajan bowled Danish Kaneria to end Pakistan's second innings at 226 and give India a 195 runs comprehensive victory.

Anil Kumble proved to be unplayable on the final day. The pitch did not have demons, it was the unwavering accuracy of Anil Kumble's bowling that set up India's victory. Anil Kumble's bowling figures. 38-16-63-7.

Well done, Anil Kumble, Well bowled! Congratulations, India! Congratulations to Rahul Dravid for winning the man of the match award.

Cricket: 2nd Test. End of 4th Day's Play. Pakistan are 95/1 chasing 422 to Win.

Shahid Afridi started with a bang and smashed 59 runs to get Pakistan off to a good start and finish the day at 95/1 chasing 422 to win. Shahid Afridi was out caught by Ganguly off the bowling of Kumble at the fag end of the day. One can't blame Afridi, that's the way he plays, and he has put the match in an interesting position with his fast batting.

Pakistan need 327 runs to win on the final day. India need to take nine wickets to win the test. It will be an interesting day's play tomorrow. Let's see what it has in store. India v Pakistan matches are always exciting and this test has been full of twists and turns, India taking an upper hand, then Pakistan, then again India with Rahul Dravid's batting, and now Pakistan is fighting back.

Shahid Afridi has set up the match. Now Pakistan should go for the chase and India should go for the kill. This match shouldn't end in a draw.

Cricket: 2nd Test. 4th Day. India set Pakistan 422 to Win.

AFP Photo Rahul Dravid's Century
Rahul Dravid Scores a Century in both Innings.
Rahul Dravid scored a century in both innings of a test for the 2nd time in his career and Dinesh Karthik gave good support as India took the match away from Pakistan on the 4th afternoon of the 2nd test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Rahul Dravid had earlier scored a century in both innings (190 and 103 n.o.) of a test during the 1998/99 season versus New Zealand in Hamilton, NZ.

Rahul Dravid scored 110 runs in the first innings and then true to his nickname, played like a Wall in the second innings scoring 135 runs to hold the innings together and give India enough runs on board to push for a win tomorrow.

Ganguly fails again-nothing new!
Saurav Ganguly was out trying to pull a short one from Sami and ended up miscuing the shot and Sami ran toward mid-wicket to take a caught-and-bowled chance. One fails to recollect the last time Saurav Ganguly had played an innings of substance when India needed it the most.

Laxman retires hurt
VVS Laxman retired hurt soon after; hit on the head by a rising delivery from Sami. In came Dinesh Karthik and all of a sudden it looked like Pakistan were in with a real chance of ending the India innings under 250.

Dinesh Karthik's gutsy batting.
Dinesh Karthik arrived at the crease with the score on 161/4. He played the best-innings of his short test career. Karthik kept the scoreboard moving and gave good support to Rahul Dravid. They shared a 167 runs partnership that gave India a lead of more than 300.

Two quick wickets before tea
Rahul Dravid and Dinesh Karthik fell in quick succession. Rahul Dravid was out for 135 runs (283 balls 15 fours) and Dinesh Karthik missed his maiden test century by seven runs (93 runs 140 balls 13 fours) when he was bowled by Danish Kaneria.

421 runs ahead
Laxman was stumped by Kamran Akmal of Danish Kaneria; Harbhajan didn't last long and went for a duck, and so did Balaji; both taken by Razzaq. Irfan hit two sixes off Kaneria and is unbeaten of 38 with Kumble the last man in.

Younis Khan and Yousuf Youhana score unbeaten centuries.

Centuries by Younis Khan (108 n.o. from 167 balls with 14 fours) and Yousuf Youhana (101 n.o. from 172 balls with 13 fours), and their unbeaten third wicket partnership of 203 runs put Pakistan in a strong position to take the first innings lead tomorrow. Yousuf Youhana reached his hundred with a four to the midwicket fence off the bowling of Harbhajan on the last ball of the day's play.

Pakistan's first innings started with a flourish. Shahid Afridi scored 29 runs (7 fours) in quick time before he was caught by Sachin off Irfan Pathan. The other opener, Taufeeq Umar was caught by Harbhajan off Balaji and Pakistan were 2 down with 70 on board.

Younis Khan, who had a lean run with the bat in the last few matches was joined Yousuf Youhana who had earlier looked susceptible against Irfan's left-arm pace. However that was not to be today as both scored at a brisk pace of more than four runs per over and remained unbeaten at stumps on the 2nd day.

I'll post more once I watch the highlights of the day's play.

Cricket: 2nd Test, 2nd Day. India 407 All Out

Harbhajan and Kumble take India past 400

A last wicket stand of 44 runs helped India cross 400 on the 2nd morning of the 2nd test versus Pakistan at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

India lost three quick wickets and were 363 for 9 before Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble scored 27 and 21 to take India past the 400 runs mark before Harbhajan was out LBW to Razzaq.

Dinesh Karthik was run out on his overnight score of 28; Balaji was bowled by Afridi for 3, and Irfan was caught off the bowling of Kaneria for 8.
Danish Kaneria, Shahid Afridi, and Abdul Razzaq chipped in with three wickets each.

Pakistan open with Shahid Afridi and Taufeeq Umar. This is a good chance for Shahid to play a big innings to secure his place in the team. Irfan and Balaji vs. Shahid Afridi will be an interesting duel. Shahid Afridi is always going to be suspect in the first few overs and that's the best time to get him out.

Mild Tremors Felt in Pune

Mild tremors shook Pune at 03:17 (+05:30 GMT) this afternoon. I felt the tremors in office for five-six seconds and then they stopped. For those few seconds the chair and the floor shook and it was over soon. People got up from their chairs, exchanged puzzled looks and wry smiles, and it was back to normal. I didn't think of it as a tremor until I read it on Rediff at 6 in the evening.

Rediff.com has confirmed it was a minor earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. There are no reports of damage to life or property.

Initial reports said the earthquake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale, was centered around Koyna in western Maharashtra. Konya is an area prone to seismic activity. Read more on Rediff and ToI.

Cricket: Media Reports Suggest a Fast Pitch at the Eden Gardens

Media reports suggest a green-top (pitch that helps fast bowlers) for the 2nd test between India and Pakistan starting this Wednesday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata (Calcutta).

If the pitch helps fast bowlers then India should persist with Irfan, Balaji, and Zaheer with Ganguly to bowl a few overs of medium pace, and Harbhajan Singh should come in for Anil Kumble (a tough choice) as he has always performed at the Eden Gardens.

Let's hope for a batting masterpiece from VVS Laxman. It is March and it is the summer of 2005. It was March and it was the summer of 2001 when VVS Laxman set the Eden Gardens aglow with his sublime strokeplay that dazzled the world. How can one forget those magical cover drives against Shane Warne and those wristy flicks off Jason Gillespie.

(Start digression)

Let me go down Memory Lane and recollect some gems from VVS Laxman's batting.

Eden Gardens, Kolkata. March 2001. India v. Australia.

1. In comes Shane Warne bowling round the wicket, pitches wide outside the leg-stump.
VVS Laxman takes two steps forward meets the ball in flight (now this is magic), waves the bat like a magic wand and playing with the spin hits it past cover and mid-off, the ball running all the way along the carpet for another four. Amazing shot and there were so many of them on that magical summer afternoon at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata when VVS Laxman played the innings of his lifetime.

2. Jason Gillespie bowling right arm over to VVS Laxman, ball pitches outside the off-stump, VVS moves on the front foot picks the length and with a flourish of the wrist sends it to the mid-wicket fence. Amazing!

Normal batsmen would have played the first shot for the second ball and the second shot for the first ball. Ball pitched on leg would go to mid-wicket and ball pitched on the off would go to covers.

VVS Laxman's wristy batting made those kind of impossible shots possible and that earned him the nickname of Very Very Special (VVS) Laxman. His real name is Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman.

VVS has it in him to produce one more masterpiece and what better occasion to show his class and display his magic than the cauldron of Eden Gardens against Pakistan.

(End digression)

Come on VVS Laxman. One more sublime innings at the Eden Gardens. Wish you all the Best!

Cricket: Kamran Akmal's Century Helps Pakistan Draw the First Test versus India

1st Test Match, 5th day's play.

Pakistan's wicket keeper Kamran Akmal scored his maiden test century and Abdul Razzaq played a supporting role to frustrate India's bowlers who couldn't take four Pakistani wickets in a day. Razzaq and Akmal shared a 184 runs seventh wicket partnership to take Pakistan beyond a score of 400 and the match out of India's hands and the only likely result was a draw from there on.

Brief Scores:

He's an amazing player who always performs when the team needs it the most. A score of 300 for 4 and chances are Gilly won't play, but 200 for 4 and in comes Adam Gilchrist smashes the attack and changes the match. Well played, Gilly! Beautiful Sneha UllalSalman Khan's latest movie, Lucky - No Time for Love, stars Aishwarya Rai look-alike Sneha Ullal. Sneha looks like Aishwarya Rai. Those greyish-green eyes complement a fair complexion and charming looks.

Cricket: India v. Pakistan. 1st Test. 3rd Day.

Cricket Test. India v. Pakistan. 1st Test. End of 3rd day's play.

I haven't written anything on the Cricket test match. I follow the match on Cricinfo, but I haven't been able to catch up on the highlights. Saw a bit of Sachin's batting on DD Sports last night. Wonder where are the highlights packages? They seemed to show the entire match.

It's good that Sachin didn't score a century. It was a dull, laboured, stodgy, fidgeting, and uncomfortable ninety-four runs scored by Sachin. Sachin's 35th test century should befit his reputation. I'll be happy watching Sachin score a fast 50 with five fours and a six rather than a pottering 94 with a strike rate of less than 50.

Come on Sachin! Show us the batting of yore. Those booming straight drives past the bowler; that tap off the back foot past mid-off—fast enough to reach the boundary and slow enough to make the fielder chase till the end. The magic of Sachin's batting when will it come back or will it come back? Or has Virender Sehwag stamped his style on our psyche that it even overshadows Sachin?

I will catch up on today's highlights and post tonight or tomorrow morning.

Update I: 4th day's play. 11th March.
Pakistan are three down for only twenty-three on board in their 2nd innings.

Scores:
Pakistan...1st Innings...312 all out
India........1st Innings....516 all out
Pakistan...2nd Innings...29 for 3

Update II: 02:10 p.m. IST. Inzamam and Yousuf Youhana have taken the score past 100 without further loss. Pakistan are 121 for 3. If Pakistan bats through the day and a session tomorrow to set India a target of 200 to win in 75 overs on the final day then it will be interesting to see whether India accepts the run chase and goes for a win or settles for a draw.
