Some interesting developments on the job front lined up for this week.

Hey, for those from Pune (I am at Nagar road), did you hear two huge (blasting) sounds around 5 this evening. Was it a mild earthquake or what? Initally, I thought it would be some blasting work going on at the construction site half a kilometre away. Punit came back from office and told me he too heard the sound at Model colony, at the other end of the city, at the same time. What was that sound? Any idea? The news doesn't mention anything? Was it a mild earthquake tremor or what?

I was listening to this nice song. 'To Love a Woman.'
A few lines lines from the song.

Will she love you tomorrow like she loves you today
She keeps your heart guessing but she's yours if she stays
That's what it feels like
To love a woman.

A Zen Story. Open your Mind.

An American scholar in Zen Philosophy goes to meet a Japanese Zen Master.
The American has a lot of knowledge about Japan and Zen philosophy.
He wants to meet the master. The master's attendant comes and asks the visitor, "Would you like some coffee?" The American replies in the positive. The attendant brings a cup of coffee full to the brim, then he brings a jug of coffee and starts pouring the coffee in the already full cup. The coffee spills over and within minutes the jug is empty.

The Zen Master comes and tells the American. "Son, empty your mind, if you want to learn. Right now, your mind is full of knowledge, ideas, thoughts, observations and, unless you empty all those, your mind will be like the cup of coffee, full to the brim and not able to take anymore and the jug of my knowledge would be emptied without you having learnt anything. Empty your mind and let it open to wisdom."

There's a saying among prospectors. Go out looking for one thing and that's all you'll ever find. Always be passionate and inquisitive about things. Open your mind to wisdom.

Hyderabad Musings. Humour.

Kal ata bole to kab ata bhai...

Parsaun... tomorrow, yesterday... has a different meaning in Hyderabad.
It can mean tomorrow or day after tomorrow or yesterday or day before yesterday or even a month ago.

We had called a carpenter for some household work.

C: Carpenter
Me: Myself.

C: Saab plywood aato (Auto) se leka ata
Me: kab aate bhai (read, bhai as bh(e), pronounce without the 'Hindi matra' for 'bha').
C: kal ata mai, aap nakko bole to bhi, kal ata mai...

Two days pass by, the carpenter doesn't turn up.
He has a cell phone.

Me: Maalik, aap kal aate bole to kab aate bhai...
C: Parsaun ghar ke fittinga dekh liye, ab kal aata mai..
Me: Aap parsaun, kal ata bole the, to ab gharku kab aarain?
C: Kal ata mai...
Me: Exasperated, maalik, kal bole to kab ata aapka kal... kitte din ke baad.
C: Mai parsaun ata... (He meant tomorrow)
Me: Dost, aap parsaun aaye the (I meant yesterday) lol
C: Mai parsaun bole to Sunday ke payle aata
Me: Jab bhi aao, kal ata mat bolo, naito, nai bole to bhi, hum loga idhar aapke aane ke vaaste ghar se baahar nai na jaa sakte..
C: Aap fikar nakko karo Saab, mai ab kal aata bole to parsaun aattach.
Me: To ab kab aare bhai?
C: Do-teen roz se aata
Me: Theek hai, phone karke aana
C: Hau saab

He did come after a couple of days.

Whenever, I had some work with a mason, carpenter, mechanic etc. I always used to ask, Kal aaata bole to kitte din baad aate bhai? ek hafta ya ek mahinaa... :-)

Similarly with time, ab aata bole to kab aata...

Me: Myself
Travel agent: T

Me:Saade-nau ka bus ka time hai... dost, bus kab aarai, bhai?
T: sab Seeta (seata) full kiye to aati...
T: Ab aati saab
Me: ab bole to kab? :-) Aur sab seata full kiye to seat kaise milti
T: Bole to season mai jaana mushkil hai, Aaapke liye seeta book kartaon na mai...
Me: Aap kitta lenge...
T: Puna honaa to chaar sau hotaaa
Me: Bombay tak kaiku free mai bhejre maalik..Dost, Puna tak saade teenso le lo
Travel: Nahin hota bhai, seata full hai, abbi ek book kara hu...dekho uno chaar sau diye.. nahin to aapko detaa saab...aap bhot baar aate to bees kam kartaon...
Me: teen so saath le lo....
T: Aap regular aate bole to teen so assi mai, mai seeta book kartaon
Me: kardo maalik, ghar to jaana hai...agli baar teen so bees lena... :-)

An interesting link to read. The Future of Search... Google 2020.

Thoughts.

The future of search.

There's an interesting pic. of what Google will be like in 2005 and 2020 on searchenginewatch.

My thoughts on the future of search and Google search in particular.

Five years from now Google will be a full-fledged shopping web site like ebay.
For any search query alongwith the search results, there will be separate links for "Buy this, Read Review, Browse Features, Check Stores" and this will be the result from Google itself with the links leading to various pages on Google's web sites from where one could buy, read review, check the availability and browse the features of a product, item, thing, material etc.

For any search query there will be an advanced Shopping drop down list based on which the results related to web sites as well as Google shopping sites would be shown. These results would be over and above the ones provided by Google's Froogle. Froogle would metamorphose (change, use a simple word brother!) into a one stop shop for all kinds of products with links leading to the web site providers and also to Google's internal shopping sites, with a advanced search utility for searching Google specific products.

Google would also try and tie-up with vendors offline to have a global presence. For example, from Googlestore.com one would have links to offline merchants who would sell their products in different countries.

Some thoughts, I put them down on paper.

Security is and will be a major concern. Google could also do well do go in the field of anti-virus solutions and build a specialty search engine for removing viruses.

There will be a Google Meta Search Engine too (this is an interesting possibility).
Google will expand and then there will be a search engine to search Google's different search engines!!! :-)

How about a Google Messenger where you have the world at your fingertips with a Google Messenger that incorporates Gmail, web, images, news, groups, shopping, froogle, meta and all other searches.

Google's Fields.

Google

Web, Images, Groups (Usenet), Groups (created by new users), Images, Gmail, Orkut, Personals, Softwares, Programming, Google Meta, Google Voice. Google Web Cam, Google Messenger.

Searching the deepweb, scanning the contents of all the libraries of the world and making a Google Library search with any book in any language available for a download, free or otherwise as a word or a pdf file thru Google's Library search.

The ability to imagine is the first step towards creating a future...

An interesting article. Of Black Swans and Google. (A black swan is an event that lies beyond the realm of normal expectations).

Watched "He Said She Said" on Star Movies last night.

The film is about two journalists (Kevin Bacon as Dan Hanson and Elizabeth Perkins as Lorie Bryer), who are colleagues and competitors, they write columns in a newspaper for and against a topic. From newspaper they move on to television and start living together.

The guy doesn't commit to marriage, the girl is interested in marriage. After three years of working on the same show, living together, they don't know where their relationship is heading. The gal has had enough and decides to call it quits, after hitting her partner, competitor, colleague and friend with a mug on a live show. The show generates a lot of publicity, the promoters are excited and see that as a marketing opportunity, the girl is emotionally upset, ("What is the use of emotions, if you can't express them!", a lovely quote from the film).

On their last show which they do separately, the girl proposes the guy's views which she had opposed the other day and in a perfect reversal, the guy proposes the girl's views on 'the merger of highways' which is a metaphor for their lives. (Should two highways going separately be merged?).

If you guys get a chance, I suggest you should watch it.

A lovely Quote.

A man who uses a great many words to express his meaning is like a bad marksman who, instead of aiming a single stone at an object, takes up a handful and throws at it in hopes he may hit.
~ Samuel Johnson

A beautiful quote on writing.

Writing has to be simple and easy to understand.

No need to write, "we will get back to you after going through the information you've sent and based on the information received, we will send you a reply regarding the further progress of the matter under consideration."

Say, "We'll inform you when we arrive at a decision."

No wonders Lawyers are the only people who write a ten thousand word document and call it a brief! :-)

Google's Spelling Feature.

If you're not sure of the spelling of a word and are looking for the right spelling, use the spell: operator in your google search query.

For example, if you're not sure of the spelling of 'existential' whether it is with an i or with an e, use the google search query as spell:exestential (which is the wrong spelling, btw) and you will get the result as Did you mean spell:existential (which is the right spelling). This is cool. Try it out!

Pune's pot-holed roads.

Wanted to write this. I'm from Pune. I like my city.

Pune needs better roads, more fly-overs and roads that last a monsoon!

Pune's Pot-holed Roads. Rains, pot-holes, traffic-jams, road widening and construction, water-logging has made driving on the roads of Pune, a challenge (a euphemism, use your own harsh word here). I have my bike in Hyderabad or else I'd have got a severe backache riding my bike on Pune's pot-holed roads.

The condition of Pune's roads is pathetic. Today's newspaper states that there has been record rainfall in Pune for the month of August. There has been more rainfall this August, in these two weeks, than it has been for the last forty-eight years of August!!

The roads of Pune are in a very bad shape would be an under-statement. There is no sign of roads. At the Pune-Nagar road, the stretch from Ramwadi octroi post to Shastrinagar, road widening and concretization is going on so only one side of the road is available for traffic and that too is an apology for a road. The Pune-Nagar road from Shastrinagar to Ramwadi and beyond is a collection of pot-holes. An assorted collection of pot-holes of various shapes and sizes on the ground and that's Pune-Nagar road for you.

Nagar Road is the second worst road in Pune, as per a recent article in The Times of India. The worst road in Pune is the Pune-Solapur, Hadapsar road.

They can't even repair the road as only one side is available for traffic. So for a quick fix solution small stones are dumped to fill the potholes on the road and as it rains, they scatter and that creates even more difficulties.

Having worked in different cities, a comparison always crops up.

In Hyderabad the authorities have a novel way. They do all the road repairing, cleaning work at night, when the roads are empty and there is less traffic. In Hyderabad, if you go out early in the morning or late in the night, you will find workers in their light blue dress, cleaning the roads, marking lines for pedestrian crossing, doing road construction.
However, now, as the Congress is in power, I don't know what the condition of Hyderabad will be. They too should continue with the good work done by Chandrababu Naidu; if not for the whole of Andhra Pradesh, then atleast for Hyderabad.

Andhra Pradesh is already offering free electricity to farmers (that was a major point on which the Congress came to power in A.P.) and last month there was an announcement by the CM of Maharashtra (with an eye on the forthcoming Assembly election at the end of the year), that they too would be offering free electricity to farmers and all rural agriculture bills would be waived off from July 2004 onwards. There was also another announcement about the increase in petrol prices and a further increase expected.

Pune has the third highest number of IT companies after Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Our infrastructure needs a lot of improvement. If Pune has to compete with other cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bombay and Gurgaon; our infrastructure has to improve. In Bangalore there are a lot of traffic-jams due to the construction of flyovers. Once that is done, the going would be smooth. In Pune, there is a need for flyovers!

Koregaon Park (it isn't a park, it is an area) in Pune isn't the same anymore.
The North Main Road was always more commercial with the influence of the Osho Commune. Now even the South Main Road has become commercialised. Almost every nook and corner has been occupied on the North Main Road of Koregaon Park and the same is happening with the South Main Road, with people selling ethnic wear, small eating joints, boutiques, shops selling handicrafts and other items (targetted at tourists) and other small and big shops and offices on the narrow road with ever-increasing traffic. A lot of software companies have their offices in Koregaon Park. It was and still is a piece of prime real estate.

I wouldn't suggest new IT companies to set base at Koregaon Park. Instead of that, the IT park at Kharadi on Pune-Nagar road or the new buildings, and there are so many of them coming up at Kalyaninagar or the apartments at Vimannagar would be a good choice to start a new IT company. Now Koregaon Park has been linked to Kalyaninagar with a bridge, from the end of North Main Road to the start of Kalyaninagar.

There's is so much construction activity going on in Kalyaninagar. Business has picked up for the small shops, grocery stores and eating joints in Kalyaninagar. Earlier most of the eateries used to be vacant in the afternoons, now there are so many bikes parked.

There was a news item on Aajtak channel a couple of days back wherein they had mentioned about people betting huge amounts on the rainfall in Mumbai by the end of September this year. As the saying goes, 'One doesn't need an occasion to Gamble!.'

So these were some thoughts about my city Pune, pot-holes, rains, infrastructure, progress and development.

I'm commuting by Auto as I don't have my bike here. Once I get my bike, more news about Pune in the rains.
A trip to Khadakwasla Lake, bad roads or not is a must!

Bye for now!

Cheers!

Feel the beauty of Rabindranath Tagore's Poetry.

Note the use of the word 'feel', I haven't mentioned read, I've written, 'feel' and that's what you've to do while reading the epigrams, four-liners, short poems given below.

Each line, each word used in context has depth of meaning, especially the comparisons of nature in it's various colours.

One needs to be a 'Romantic' at heart - to read, visualise and feel these epigrams of Rabindranath Tagore.

These are from 'Fireflies' - a collection of 256 short verses, epigrams written by Rabindranath Tagore.

The view from my first floor bedroom window. My gaze beyond the two iron railings and what I am seeing right now.

Long leaves of the small coconut tree, drops of water on them, falling, one by one.
Rains, greenery on the ground, can see the Bishop's school construction work. A few banana plantations near the construction site five hundred metres from here. The first floor done. The view from the window looks good when its raining heavily. The drops of rain, looking silvery from this side of the window, a few ladies with umbrellas crossing the ground. Four raindrops on a leaf outside the window, each reaching the tip of the leaf and then gently falling, one drop has stopped at the tip of the leaf, now it has fallen, slowly. It has stopped raining, will start again in five minutes. I wrote this description online.

If you have a moment to spare, every window has a story to tell! What's yours? :-)

Bye for now!
