There are 1.7 million Indians on Orkut

Orkut, the social networking Web site of Google that connects people through a trusted network of friends, has about 1.68 million (almost 17 lakh) users from India, and they form 7% of its 24 million users.

This is a good opportunity for Indian IT recruiters. Orkut is better than any placement consultancy to approach a potential candidate through a trusted network of contacts.

Orkut Demographics as of July 30, 2006. Source: Wikipedia.

Orkut statistics - July 30, 2006 - Brazilians 66%, Americans 13%, Indians 7% of 24 million users- Total Users: 24 million
- Brazilians: 66% - 15.9mn
- Americans: 13% - 3.1mn
- Indians: 7% - 1.68mn

Is Google thinking of an advertising opportunity here, or are Brazil and India nascent e-commerce markets for them to think of advertising on Orkut?

We did see Joga.com football ads on Orkut during the recent football world cup. Or maybe the bad, bad server has had its donut stolen and Google is searching to give it a new donut, but this time around let's have a server that shows only good, good messages. :-)
